How to Calculate Shingles for a Roof
Roofing materials are measured in “squares” — each square covers 100 square feet of roof area. Most asphalt shingles come in bundles, and it takes 3 bundles to cover one square for standard 3-tab and architectural shingles. Premium and designer shingles may require 4–5 bundles per square due to their heavier weight and thicker profile.
Always add a waste factor to your calculation. For simple gable roofs, 10% waste is sufficient. Complex roofs with many hips, valleys, and dormers may need 15% or more to account for cutting and fitting.
Shingle Types Compared
3-Tab Shingles
The most economical option, 3-tab shingles have a flat appearance with uniform rectangular tabs. They typically last 15–20 years and cost $80–$120 per square (materials only). They are lighter weight and easier to install but offer less wind resistance than architectural shingles.
Architectural Shingles
Also called dimensional or laminated shingles, architectural shingles have a thicker, layered construction that creates a textured, dimensional appearance. They last 25–30 years, offer better wind resistance (up to 130 mph), and are the most popular choice for residential roofing. Cost: $120–$180 per square.
Premium / Designer Shingles
Premium shingles mimic the appearance of natural slate, cedar shake, or tile. They are the heaviest and most durable asphalt option, lasting 30–50 years. Cost: $200–$350 per square. They often require 4 bundles per square and may need additional structural support due to their weight.
Additional Materials You Will Need
- Underlayment: Synthetic underlayment (preferred over felt) protects the roof deck. Rolls typically cover 1,000 sq ft.
- Ridge cap shingles: Specially shaped shingles for the ridge line. One bundle covers about 33 linear feet.
- Drip edge: Metal flashing along eaves and rakes. Sold in 10-foot lengths.
- Ice and water shield: Self-adhering membrane for eaves, valleys, and penetrations (required by code in many areas).
- Roofing nails: Approximately 4 nails per shingle, about 320 nails per square.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bundles of shingles do I need?
Divide your total roof area by 100 to get roofing squares, then multiply by 3 (or 4 for premium shingles). Add your waste factor (10–15%). Our calculator does this automatically.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?
3-tab shingles: about 50–65 lbs per bundle. Architectural: 65–80 lbs. Premium: 80–100+ lbs. Plan your logistics accordingly — a 20-square roof means lifting 60+ bundles to the roof.
Can I install shingles over existing shingles?
Most building codes allow a maximum of two layers of asphalt shingles. However, a tear-off is recommended for best results — it allows you to inspect the deck for damage and ensures proper underlayment installation.
What is the best shingle for my area?
High-wind areas: architectural shingles rated for 130+ mph. Heavy snow areas: heavier architectural or premium shingles that resist ice dam damage. Hot climates: look for algae-resistant and reflective (cool roof) rated shingles.
How long does a shingle roof last?
3-tab: 15–20 years. Architectural: 25–30 years. Premium: 30–50 years. Actual lifespan depends on climate, ventilation, installation quality, and maintenance.
What waste percentage should I use?
10% for simple gable roofs, 12–15% for hip roofs or roofs with multiple valleys and dormers, and up to 20% for very complex roof geometries.
