Roof Area Calculator
Calculate your total roof area from ground-level measurements. Enter your house dimensions, roof pitch, and overhang to get accurate square footage without climbing a ladder.
How to Calculate Roof Area from the Ground
You do not need to climb on your roof to estimate its area. By measuring the house footprint from the ground and knowing the roof pitch, you can calculate the actual roof surface area using a pitch multiplier. The pitch multiplier accounts for the slope — steeper roofs have more surface area than flat roofs covering the same footprint.
The formula is: Roof Area = Footprint Area × Pitch Multiplier. The pitch multiplier is calculated as √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12, where rise is the number of inches the roof rises per 12 inches of horizontal run.
Understanding Roof Pitch
Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio of rise to run. A 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. Common residential pitches range from 4/12 (gentle slope) to 12/12 (45-degree angle). The pitch affects material requirements, walkability, and snow/rain shedding.
Pitch Multiplier Reference
- 4/12 pitch: 1.054 multiplier
- 6/12 pitch: 1.118 multiplier
- 8/12 pitch: 1.202 multiplier
- 10/12 pitch: 1.302 multiplier
- 12/12 pitch: 1.414 multiplier
How to Determine Your Roof Pitch
The easiest method: from inside the attic, hold a level horizontally against a rafter, mark 12 inches from the rafter, then measure straight up from that mark to the rafter. That vertical measurement is your rise. Alternatively, many roofing contractors and home inspectors note the pitch in their reports.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet. Roofing materials (shingles, underlayment) are often priced and sold per square. A 2,000 sqft roof equals 20 squares.
Does this calculator work for complex roof shapes?
This calculator works for simple gable and hip roofs with a consistent pitch. For complex roofs with multiple sections, dormers, or varying pitches, calculate each section separately and add them together.
How do I measure the footprint if my house is not rectangular?
Break your house into rectangles, measure each one, and add the areas together. For L-shaped or T-shaped houses, this typically means measuring 2–3 rectangles.
Why does overhang matter?
Roof overhang (also called eaves) extends beyond the exterior walls. A 12-inch overhang on all sides of a 40×30 house adds about 150 extra square feet of roof area that needs to be covered with roofing material.
How accurate is this calculation?
For simple roof shapes with consistent pitch, this method is accurate to within 5–10%. Complex roofs with valleys, dormers, or multiple ridgelines may require a professional measurement or satellite-based roof measurement service.
