How to Calculate Tiles Needed
Tile projects require careful measurement to avoid running short mid-installation. The basic calculation is straightforward, but accounting for waste, pattern layout, and grout makes the difference between a smooth project and an expensive one.
The Tile Formula
Tiles needed = (Area in sq ft ÷ Tile area in sq ft) × Waste factor
Thin-set mortar = Area ÷ Coverage rate (varies by trowel size)
Grout = Based on tile size, joint width, and area

Tile Types and Applications
- Ceramic: $1–$7/sq ft. Most affordable, wide color selection. Best for walls, backsplashes, and light-traffic floors.
- Porcelain: $3–$15/sq ft. Denser and harder than ceramic. Water absorption under 0.5%. Suitable for outdoor use, high-traffic floors, and wet areas.
- Natural stone: $5–$30/sq ft. Marble, travertine, slate, granite. Unique natural beauty but requires sealing and more maintenance.
- Glass: $7–$30/sq ft. Backsplashes and accent walls. Reflects light beautifully. Requires special thin-set and careful cutting.
Substrate Preparation
Proper substrate preparation is critical per TCNA (Tile Council of North America) guidelines:
- Concrete floors: Must be cured 28 days minimum. Level to within 1/4" per 10 feet. Use self-leveling compound for uneven surfaces.
- Plywood subfloor: Minimum 1-1/4" total thickness. Install cement backer board (1/4" or 1/2") over plywood for floors.
- Shower walls: Use cement board or foam board (Kerdi, GoBoard) per IRC R702.4. Never tile over standard drywall in wet areas.
- Backsplashes: Can tile directly over painted drywall if surface is clean and scuffed for adhesion.
Waste Factors by Pattern
- Straight lay: 10% waste. Simplest installation with least cutting.
- Brick/offset: 10–12% waste. Staggered joints require more end cuts.
- Diagonal (45°): 15% waste. Every perimeter tile is cut at an angle.
- Herringbone: 15–20% waste. Complex pattern with many angled cuts.
- Chevron: 15–20% waste. Similar to herringbone but with mitered ends.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many tiles do I need?
Divide your area by the tile area, then add 10% for straight layouts or 15% for diagonal patterns. A 100 sq ft floor with 12×12 tiles needs 110 tiles (100 plus 10% waste). Always round up to full boxes.
How much grout do I need?
A 25-lb bag of sanded grout covers 100–200 sq ft of 12×12 tiles with 1/8" joints. Smaller tiles and wider joints use more grout. Use unsanded grout for joints narrower than 1/8"; sanded for wider joints.
How much extra tile should I buy?
10% extra minimum for simple layouts, 15% for diagonal or herringbone, 20% for complex rooms. Always keep a few spare tiles for future repairs — tile styles are discontinued frequently.
What size tile for small bathrooms?
Large-format tiles (12×24+) minimize grout lines and make spaces look bigger. Use small mosaic tiles on shower floors to follow drain slopes. Avoid very large tiles in very small spaces where many cuts would be needed.
