Paint Calculator
Calculate how many gallons of paint you need for walls, ceilings, and trim. Accounts for doors, windows, number of coats, and gives cost estimates by paint quality.
How to Calculate Paint Needed
Buying the right amount of paint saves money and prevents frustrating mid-project trips to the store. The calculation involves measuring wall area, subtracting openings, and dividing by paint coverage rate.
The Paint Formula
Wall Area = Perimeter × Ceiling Height
Net Area = Wall Area − Doors (21 sq ft each) − Windows (12 sq ft each)
Gallons= (Net Area × Number of Coats) ÷ Coverage Rate (350–400 sq ft/gal)
For a room that is 15×12 ft with 8-ft ceilings, one door, and two windows: Perimeter = 54 ft. Wall area = 432 sq ft. Net area = 432 − 21 − 24 = 387 sq ft. With two coats at 375 sq ft/gal: 387 × 2 ÷ 375 = 2.06 gallons — buy 3 gallons to be safe.
Paint Coverage Rates
Coverage varies by surface type and paint quality:
- Smooth drywall: 350–400 sq ft per gallon
- Textured walls: 250–350 sq ft per gallon
- Bare drywall: 250–300 sq ft per gallon (more porous)
- Wood trim: 300–350 sq ft per gallon
- Concrete/masonry: 200–300 sq ft per gallon
Paint Sheens Explained
Choosing the right sheen affects both appearance and durability:
- Flat/Matte: No shine, hides imperfections. Best for ceilings and low-traffic rooms. Harder to clean.
- Eggshell: Subtle sheen, easy to wipe clean. The most popular choice for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.
- Satin: Soft sheen with good washability. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, kids' rooms, and high-traffic areas.
- Semi-Gloss: Noticeable shine, very durable and washable. Standard for trim, doors, cabinets, and moisture-prone areas.
- High-Gloss: Maximum shine and durability. Used for front doors, furniture, and high-wear surfaces.
Paint Quality Tiers
Paint price reflects real differences in coverage, durability, and appearance:
- Economy ($20–$30/gal): Lower coverage (300 sq ft), may need 3 coats, fades faster. Fine for utility rooms and ceilings.
- Mid-range ($35–$50/gal): Good coverage (375 sq ft), excellent for most residential applications. Best value for money.
- Premium ($50–$80/gal): Superior coverage (often one-coat), excellent durability, stain resistance, and color retention. Worth it for high-traffic and high-visibility areas.
Preparation Tips for Better Results
- Clean walls with TSP (trisodium phosphate) or degreaser before painting
- Fill nail holes and cracks with spackle, sand smooth when dry
- Use painter's tape on trim, ceiling edges, and around fixtures
- Prime bare drywall, wood, and stain spots with appropriate primer
- Remove switch plates and outlet covers for clean edges
Frequently Asked Questions
How much paint do I need for a 12×12 room?
A 12×12 room with 8-ft ceilings has about 384 sq ft of wall area. Subtracting a door and two windows (~45 sq ft), you need coverage for ~339 sq ft. With two coats at 375 sq ft/gal coverage, that's about 2 gallons. Buy an extra quart for touch-ups.
How many square feet does a gallon cover?
One gallon covers 350–400 sq ft per coat on smooth surfaces. Textured walls reduce coverage to 250–350 sq ft. Always check the specific product label, as coverage varies by brand and formula.
Do I need primer?
Use separate primer for: new drywall, bare wood, stain blocking, major color changes (dark to light), and glossy surfaces. For repaints over similar colors on previously painted walls, a quality paint-and-primer-in-one product usually works fine.
How many coats do I need?
Two coats is standard. One coat works for same-color repaints with premium paint. Three coats may be needed for dark-to-light color changes or on new drywall without separate primer.
What sheen should I use?
Eggshell for most living spaces, satin for kitchens and bathrooms, semi-gloss for trim and doors, flat for ceilings. Higher sheens are more durable and washable but show surface imperfections more.
How much does it cost to paint a room?
DIY: $50–$120 for paint for an average room. Professional: $300–$800 per room including labor, prep, and materials. Whole house (interior): $2,000–$6,000 professional.

Coverage rates are estimates based on smooth surfaces. Actual coverage depends on surface texture, porosity, paint quality, and application method. Always buy 10–15% extra for touch-ups and waste.
