Sod Calculator
Calculate sod needed in square feet, rolls, and pallets with cost estimates for new lawn installation or patching.
How to Calculate Sod
Sod (also called turf) gives you an instant lawn. Unlike seeding, which takes 2–3 months to establish, sod is ready for light use in 2–3 weeks. Accurate measurement ensures you have enough rolls to complete your project without running short or wasting money.
The Sod Formula
Sod needed (sq ft) = Lawn area × 1.05 to 1.10 (waste factor)
Rolls = Total sq ft ÷ Roll size (typically 10 sq ft)
Pallets = Total sq ft ÷ 450–500 (sq ft per pallet)
Grass Types by Climate
- Cool-season: Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass. Best for northern US (zones 3–6). Thrive in 60–75°F.
- Warm-season: Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede. Best for southern US (zones 7–10). Thrive in 80–95°F.
- Transition zone: Tall Fescue and Zoysia work well in zones 6–7 where both types face stress periods.
Soil Preparation Steps
- Remove existing vegetation, rocks, and debris
- Test soil pH (target 6.0–7.0 for most grasses)
- Till 4–6 inches deep to loosen compacted soil
- Add 2 inches of quality topsoil or compost
- Grade for drainage (1–2% slope away from structures)
- Rake smooth and firm with a lawn roller
- Water lightly before laying sod
Sod Installation Tips
- Install sod within 24 hours of delivery (it's perishable)
- Lay in a brick pattern, staggering seams
- Butt edges tightly without overlapping
- Water immediately and deeply — soil should be moist 4–6 inches deep
- Water 2–3 times daily for the first 2 weeks, then gradually reduce
- Avoid walking on new sod for 2–3 weeks until roots establish
Frequently Asked Questions
How much sod do I need?
Measure area (length × width), add 5–10% waste. A 2,000 sq ft lawn needs 4–5 pallets (at 450–500 sq ft per pallet).
How much does sod cost?
$0.30–$0.80/sq ft for material. A 2,000 sq ft lawn costs $600–$1,600 for sod. Add $1,000–$3,000 for professional installation including soil prep.
How much does a pallet cover?
450–500 sq ft, weighing 2,000–3,000 lbs. Typically 50 rolls at 10 sq ft each.
Best time to lay sod?
Fall for cool-season, late spring/summer for warm-season. Avoid extreme temperatures.
How to prepare soil?
Grade, till, add topsoil, rake smooth, water. Final grade should be 1" below hardscapes to account for sod thickness.
